Our current recession problems

I do not know about you, but I am really upset that much of the pain we are going through right now could have been avoided.
I have been researching some information on what all started this recession and it seems very clear to me that the government run Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae “mortgage money stores - GSE's” were allowed to get so out of control due to elected officials that were either too stupid, or, busy lining their pockets, to fix the problems.
Everything else seems to dwarf these two giant government backed failures in what started the avalanche of our economic problems.
And why did it go so long before being looked at? Well here is just one video that explains a lot.

How can we be letting all this happen? Why are Americans not paying attention to what their elected officials are doing and yelling at the top of their lungs when they are wrong?
I have to believe that it is the on going problem, too many Americans now just want freebies, it is, give me this, give me that, work for it? Are you kidding me? These people are becoming the majority at the polls it seems. The other problem seems to be other Americans just might catch an ad here and there, do no research on the person running for office, and vote.
How do we stop this train wreck? Is it too late, are we doomed to fall?
