Childs Room - Simple steps to make you both happy!

Decorating a child's room, your approach should be different from decorating an adult bedroom.

For children, the bedroom is where they play, read, and listen to music, dream, or just go to be alone. So use these strategies to help create a room that will make you both much happier.

Talk to your child and find out what activities and fantasies he or she enjoys. Ask things like what their favorite colors are, and what cartoon character they like. You can decide is unique about their personality, and use that as a theme to built around.

Allow your child to help you with the project. Let them have a say about colors, bed covers, and how they want to show off their precious collectables.

Make the room functional since children use their room for many activities besides sleeping. The room should have several different zones, such as a reading area; play area, and fun area.

Storage should be a priority. Look for shelving that will work for the room, large decorative soft baskets, see thru containers, and good closets that contain plenty of space and racks.

For the window treatments keep them simple. Try to avoid long draperies for a child's room. Using shades, blinds, or shorter curtains are much safer choices. All the fabric should be versatile, patterns should be repeated in other items in the room, such as in pillows cases, quilts, lampshades, etc.

Pick out the right lighting for the room. The child's room should include multiple light sources, some for doing tasks, homework and reading, and add a soothing light for times when they are relaxing. Adding a nightlight is also important part of the room, make it decorative and that fits them.

Wallpaper or paint to add the color and texture you agreed on. You can apply decorative borders along the top of the walls, and think about adding clouds or stars to the ceiling. Very important is to make sure the walls are washable, so if you are using paint, choose a good quality semi-gloss or gloss finish. Children love bright colors, but you should limit any strong color to only one of the walls.

Be sure to allow your child to select the design theme for their room. Here are just a few suggestions: starry night, firehouse, tiny angels, bright rainbows, popular unicorns, sports themes such as baseball, football, soccer, make it for a princess, sea scenery, astronomy, race cars, trains, jungle scenes, wizards and warlocks, or dinosaurs are very popular with children.

Doing the decorating with your child offers you a great opportunity to display your friendly side, while doing some real family bonding, so have lots of fun with it! You will both benefit.
