What Exactly is a Tan Towel?

Many of us have heard about the latest trend in self-tanning, which comes in the form of a moist towelette, called a Tan Towel. How exactly does it work? It's actually very simple. A towelette, similar to a baby wipe, is impregnated with dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, DHA is the safest, most effective ingredient in sunless tanning. As a colorless chemical derived from glycerin, it interacts with amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a brown color change. The resulting color change usually lasts anywhere from five to seven days, depending upon individual skin chemistry.

A Tan Towel self tanning towelette can be applied to clean, dry skin to produce an even, natural looking color which will develop in approximately 3-4 hours. It is generally not recommended to apply moisturizers after a Tan Towel application, since it could potentially interfere with the tanning process.
